the Lumia 610 does not deviate much from its big brother, the Lumia 710. Instead, the former features a beveled metallic edge and comes in bright colors such as cyan and magenta, besides the usual white and black.

Even though the Lumia 610 is targeted at the low-end market, it does not look cheap. It's made of a glossy plastic and features a matching metallic bevel. In fact, this bevel is one of our favorite design elements on the phone, as it adds a special touch to an otherwise unremarkable-looking handset.

The 3.7-inch WVGA (800 x 480) LCD display may not boast Nokia's proprietary ClearBlack technology, but still looks vibrant nonetheless. It should suffice for basic needs such as email, Web surfing, viewing photos and videos.

Even though it's a budget handset, Lumia 610 owners will still be able to access Nokia's proprietary apps for free, particularly its location-based services. For example, Nokia Drive and the new apps which were unveiled for WP at MWC: Nokia Transport and Nokia Reading.

Downside

The Lumia 610 has a glossy plastic back cover, compared with the Lumia 710's matte finish. It has a tendency to turn smudgy fairly quickly.
Inside, there's only 8GB of internal storage, which is non-expandable. This may not be enough for entertainment junkies for storing videos and music.

The 610 is powered by an 800MHz Qualcomm processor and packs 256MB of RAM, which may not seem like much compared with the over-1GHz CPUs commonly seen these days. This is possible because Microsoft has lowered the system requirements for WP OS in order to cater to the low-end market. We have some reservations about that, but will need to have it in our labs first to find out if it has any effect on performance of the smartphone. source-asia.cnet.com

Huawei Quad-core Smartphone

Huawei Sunday launched its Ascend D Quad family of smartphones, which use an in-house developed quad-core processor.

The Chinese network equipment companyis now trying to become a competitor in the high-end smartphone space.

So far, Huawei has seen some success in the low-end smartphone sector, but at an event at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, it was clear the company wants to move up in the world and compete with the likes of Apple, HTC and Samsung Electronics.

The smartphones that will help the company do that are the Ascend D Quad and the Ascend D Quad XL, which both use Android 4.0, come with a 4.5-inch high-resolution screen and an 8-megapixel camera that can record movies at 1080p. Both phones also have 8 GB of memory.

Huawei didn't announce any pricing, but Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei Device, said the phones will be 20 to 50 percent cheaper than competing products.

At first, the phones will only support 3G, but during the second half of 2012 the company will ship LTE (Long Term Evolution) versions, it said.

Huawei's New Processor

But the most important part is the processor. The K3V2 processor uses a 64-bit architecture and a clock speed running at either 1.2 or 1.5 GHz, which will help make the Ascend D Quad family the fastest phones in the world, Huawei said.

Besides performance, Huawei has put a lot of effort into improving the battery life, which is a weakness in current smartphones, according to the company.

For example, both versions of the K3V2 processor can switch to a low-power option when users are doing less computing intensive tasks and then speed up when they are playing games. Huawei has also added some proprietary power management technology to improve battery performance, it said.

The difference between the Ascend D Quad and the Ascend D Quad XL is the size of the battery--1800 mAh versus 2500 mAh. The bigger battery makes the latter model slightly thicker--0.42 of an inch versus 0.35 of an inch.

Huawei's brand isn't well known among consumers, so the company has to make up for that with better performance, according to Huawei's Yu, who also said that the company will put out a tablet, which will also have a quad-core processor.

The products are impressive, and the use of Huawei's own silicon is a big step forward, according to Ben Wood, director of research at CCS Insight. Taking into account the performance combined with Huawei's aggressive pricing, the established vendors of Android-based smartphones should be worried, he said.

If the lower priceing becomes a reality, vendors like HTC and Sony should be nervous, according to Francisco Jeronimo, research manager at IDC. But a good product and price isn't enough; Huawei will also have to improve its brand recognition, he said.

The Ascend D Quad family will be available in China, Australia, Europe, Asia-Pacific, North and South America, and the Middle East during the second quarter of 2012. source-pcworld.com

HTC Android One series smartphones

Taiwan's HTC Corp, the world's No. 5 smartphone maker, launched a range of models on Sunday, packing advanced cameras and music functions into new designs in a push to recover from a rapid fall from grace in a challenging and fickle market.
The new phones, unveiled at the Barcelona Mobile World Congress, are crucial for HTC in its battle with Samsung Electronics and Apple Inc, a fight it was losing at the end of last year when its sales slumped and investors dumped its shares on concerns it had lost its edge.

That fall had been as rapid as HTC's rise from obscure contract maker to designer of must-have smartphones, and analysts said that its approach with the new devices represents a pragmatic choice for a company that lacks the resources of its big-pocketed rivals.

"HTC seems to have learned from mistakes it made in 2011," said Malik Saadi, Principal Analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media.

"The company aims now to concentrate on what they do best and have built their brand on: bringing innovation through design of premium devices rather than spreading efforts across all segments of the market."

The HTC One series consists of three models, the One X, One S and One V, running the latest version of Google's Android software.

The phones feature HTC's ImageSense camera technology that the company says offers photography on a par with traditional digital cameras, including fast autofocus and low-light shooting. They also have photo storage and sharing software.

The phones have fast processors for graphics and either polycarbonate or metal cases the company says are harder and more resilient than standard ones.

Music features include integrating internet radio and using audio technology from Beats Electronics, which HTC bought last year, for games as well as music.

Looking over their shoulders

HTC said 144 mobile operators -- the widest carrier support for the firm so far -- have agreed to carry HTC One range models starting from April.

"The products look competitive, but HTC executives will be looking over their shoulders nervously to see how these new devices stack up against rival Android smartphones also being announced at the show," said Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight.

Analysts note however that, as most mobile vendors are building their phones around similar themes, making it harder to differentiate models, companies will need to look to software, innovation, distribution and building partnerships to stay ahead of the game.

"HTC's strategy to streamline its branding and to offer fewer, better-differentiated products is a reaction to both market forces and engineering necessity," said Tony Cripps, principal analyst at Ovum.

"Its decision to focus on perfecting core smartphone functionality around camera and music playback is an extremely pragmatic one."

HTC said earlier this month that it anticipated a drop in revenue of as much as 36 per cent for the first quarter, well below analysts expectations.

The former contract maker had a fairytale ride in 2010 and early 2011, when its shares more than tripled in the 14 months to April 2011 and sales grew four-fold in 1- years as consumers snapped up its innovative phones with their distinctive large clock numerals.

But an equally rapid fall from grace saw its stock become the worst performer among global smartphone companies last year, down 42 per cent. source-articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com

Comparison Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 750 and Apple’s iPad 2

Design:

The Galaxy Tab comes in at just 8.6mm — thin enough for Samsung to tag it "the world's thinnest tablet". Compared to the iPad, it is 0.2mm thinner and 36g lighter, weighing in at just 565g. The plastic construction of the Galaxy Tab feels comfortable, yet stylish and is extremely well built — from the glossy black bezel garnishing the display to the soft plastic that surrounds the back of the tablet to its smooth curved edges — and one can see that its makers have not skimped on either its quality or presentation. Comparatively, the iPad2 has an aluminum outlay similar to what was used for the original iPad. This aluminium casing, while looking good, translates into the heavy feel of the iPad2.

Internal makeup and Screen:

The processor in the Galaxy Tab doesn't take a back seat to the iPad2 which has a 1GHz dual-core Apple A5 chip with 512MB of RAM. In fact the Galaxy tab trumps the iPad2 when it comes to space capabilities. The Tab is powered by a 1GHz Dual-Core NVIDIA TEGRA 2 processor and 1GB of RAM, the worth of which is realised while multi-tasking. Samsung's bluetooth capabilities come with a 3.0 version which ensures the faster transfer of files, compared to the iPad2 which has Bluetooth 2.1. The Galaxy Tab is a winner even with its display. It has a slightly larger display at 10.1 inch compared to the iPad's 9.7 inch screen and a vibrant TFT LCD display with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels, giving the tab an edge over the iPad's resolution of 1024×768 pixels.

Camera and Sound:
The Tab has a significantly better camera compared to its rival, the iPad 2. It packs a 3.2MP autofocus camera accompanied by an LED flash, which can make snapping pictures in low light conditions very useful. Additionally, the camera doubles up as a 720p HD video recorder. And while the iPad2 also captures HD quality video at 720p and has a 5X digital zoom its primary camera captures images at a measly 0.7MP.

The Tab's front (or secondary) camera also beats the iPad 2. Its 2MP front facing camera can be used for video conferencing with friends and family via Google Talk which is not limited to one single platform —unlike the iPad 2 which uses Face Time (Apple's proprietary video conferencing software) on its VGA camera up front.

On the sound front, the iPad 2 has a single speaker located on the back of the tablet, while the Galaxy Tab 10.1 offers stereo support with its dual speakers, one on each side of the tablet when held in landscape mode.

Software:

Now this is where the Galaxy Tab shines the most. It runs the Honeycomb version of Android (3.2). Samsung said in a blog post that the Ice-Cream Sandwich a.k.a. 4.0 update will be pushed out to the Tab early this year. This update will keep the tablet fresh, especially considering the heap of new tablets scheduled to release this year. The Tab's Honeycomb version is dressed with Samsung's proprietary TouchWiz User Interface that brings a number of new features to the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The browser is faster and the availability of Adobe Flash allows the user to conveniently view millions of websites. The iPad 2 on the other hand lacks the Flash support and thus makes the browsing experience a little starved.

Android's unique selling point as the platform of choice is due to its ability to let individuals customise their phone and/or tablet. Unlike the iPad 2, the Galaxy Tab can be customised to one's heart's content — from live wallpapers to third party launchers to various browsers — ultimately transforming the Tab into a "you" device.

Battery and Pricing:
Here's an aspect that both, Samsung's Galaxy Tab and the Apple iPad are on par. The Galaxy Tab is powered by a 7000mAh battery which according to Samsung, can clock up to 9 hours of video and 72 hours of music — similar to what Apple's iPad2 offers. The 16 GB Wi-Fi only versions for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (or the Galaxy Tab 750 in India) and the Apple iPad2 are being sold for Rs 33,000 and Rs 29,500 respectively at retail stores.

Biological Computer

Scientists in the US claim to have developed the world's first "biological computer" that is made from biomolecules and can decipher images encrypted on DNA chips.

A team from the Scripps Research Institute in California and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology claims it has created the computing system using bio-molecules, 'Angewandte Chemie' journal reported.

In the research, when suitable software was applied to the biological computer, the scientists found that it could decrypt, separately, fluorescent images of Scripps Research Institute and Technion logos.

And, although DNA has been used for encryption in the past, this is the first experimental demonstration of a molecular cryptosystem of images based on DNA computing, say the scientists led by Prof Ehud Keinan.

"In contrast to electronic computers, there are computing machines in which all four components are nothing but molecules," Prof Keinan said.

"For example, all biological systems and even entire living organisms are such computers. Every one of us is a biomolecular computer, a machine in which all four components are molecules that 'talk' to one another logically," he said.

The hardware and software in these devices, Keinan notes, are complex biological molecules that activate one another to carry out some predetermined chemical work.

The input is a molecule that undergoes specific, predetermined changes, following a specific set of rules (software), and the output of this chemical computation process is another well-defined molecule.

But, what a biological computer looks like? "This computer is built by combining chemical components into a solution in a tube. Various small DNA molecules are mixed in solution with selected DNA enzymes and ATP. The latter is used as the energy source of the device.

"It's a clear solution - you don't really see anything. The molecules start interacting upon one another, and we step back and watch what happens. And by tinkering with the type of DNA and enzymes in the mix, researchers can finetune the process to a desired result," said the scientists.

Added Keinan in a statment: "Our biological computing device is based on the 75-year-old design by the English mathematician, cryptanalyst, and computer scientist Alan Turing." source-economictimes.indiatimes.com
