iPhone to raise your bill by 25%

In fact, according to telecom industry experts, an iPhone might increase billing charges by up to 25-30 per cent. And that’s where Vodafone and Bharti Airtel — the two service providers who launched the gizmo in India last Friday — would like to rake in the moolah.

Both telecos have come up with special iPhone-specific data plans that are basically aimed at promoting Net-surfing on their networks.

While Vodafone is giving 250MB and 600MB data usage free per month on a plan of Rs 799 and Rs 999, respectively, Bharti Airtel is offering free 500MB per month on iPhone-specific plans that will have a basic rent of Rs 600 per month.

‘Current plans not enough’

But telecom analysts feel that these plans are not economical enough, as the iPhone will encourage users to spend more through its myriad value added services (VAS) and bundling strategies.

“iPhone will increase its owners’ bills by more than 25-30 per cent of what they used to pay earlier, especially if he uses all the functions that the phone offers in the country,” said Romal Shetty, Executive Director of the research firm KPMG.

He further pointed out that this latest gizmo, even otherwise, is too expensive, putting it out of the reach of most Indians. For Manoj Mohta, head of another analysis firm CRISIL Research, it’s the lack of 3G services that makes the iPhone too expensive for too little in return. “Only after 3G comes in will the service providers launch more of data-oriented plans. But until then it will remain an expensive proposition,” said Mohta.

He even hinted that this may actually disappoint iPhone owners, especially when there is also not sufficient Indian-specific content available for such a phone.

Also, iPhone users will need to repeatedly use iTunes (the copyrighted software created by Apple for its products and which has to be paid for) to download content. This is because the iPhone does not have any Bluetooth services that can transfer or get music from another phone.

Telcos aiming to raise data usage

Sanjay Gupta, chief marketing officer for mobile services at Bharti Airtel , told Mumbai Mirror that 98 per cent of people who use the iPhone globally have heavy data usage.

“Our aim will be to promote that data usage here too. The iPhone is already known for its VAS like GPRS, maps and iTunes,” said Gupta.

Another customer Rakesh whooped with excitement after he bought his iPhone. “I’m excited because I have got an Apple iPhone. I am not bothered about the price. Good things come at a price,” Malik told reporters.

High price and lack of high-end 3G services seem to have damaged Apple’s iPhone launch party in India. Only a few buyers turned up at midnight launches done by both the operators across eight cities in India.

What is Iphone?

iPhone is a revolutionary new mobile phone from Apple, that allows you to make a call by simply tapping a name or number in your address book, a favourites list, or a call log. It also automatically syncs all your contacts from a PC, Mac, or Internet service. And it lets you select and listen to voicemail messages in whatever order you want — just like email.

Main Features

Phone calls

With iPhone, making a call is as simple as touching a name or number. In addition, you can easily construct a favourites list for your most frequently made calls, and quickly merge calls to create conference calls.

SMS

iPhone includes an SMS application with a predictive QWERTY soft keyboard that prevents and corrects mistakes, making it easier and more efficient to use than the small plastic keyboards on many smart phones.

Voicemail

An industry first, Visual Voicemail allows you to go directly to any of your messages without listening to the prior messages. So you can quickly select the messages that are most important to you.

Photos

With a 2-megapixel camera and an advanced photo management application, iPhone goes beyond anything on a phone today. It automatically syncs photos with your PC or Mac when you dock. It displays albums with a flick of a finger. And can post your pictures directly to a Mac web gallery.

Ring tones

You can create iPhone ring tones from over 500,000 songs on the iTunes Store. You can even pick the section of the song you want. Just choose a track with a ringtone symbol, and then get creative. You can edit, loop, fade in and out, preview, and play around until your ring tone is just the way you want it. And each ring tone is only 99¢ plus the cost of the song.

3G

3G technology gives iPhone fast access to the Internet and email over cellular networks around the world. iPhone 3G also makes it possible to do more in more places: Surf the web, download email, get directions, and watch video — even while you’re on a call.
